Another Friday, and another episode of Down the Hatch with Barry Flavors. That’s right folks, it’s Flavors Friday, and this week the king of flavor is taking on Bobwhite Counter, a southern comfort food restaurant in Alphabet City. Serving up a plethora of fried chicken options and tasty sides, Bobwhite is one of the best spots in NYC (or anywhere) to get a chicken sandwich.

“Bobwhite” is actually a term for a kind of quail, not the name of the owner of the restaurant. The chef is Keedick Coulter, who opened the spot in 2012. The counter receives some of the highest scores yet, with almost all of the items on the tasting table receiving rave reviews. Barry begins with the BBQ Fried Chicken Sandwich and a side of slaw, explaining the process Bobwhite uses for creating such a sweet and delicious piece of fried chicken.

He follows up the BBQ sandwich with a plate of chicken tenders and a biscuit, which all go swiftly down the hatch. Barry’s a self-proclaimed biscuit-connoisseur, so his rating of the side is especially valuable. He goes on to try Bobwhite Counter’s signature item, the Buffalo Chicken sandwich with a side of pimento mac and cheese. These, too, go swiftly down the hatch to a rave review and a couple of wisecracks. This taste test was one of Barry’s favorites yet, and I think it should be a favorite for the viewers at home too.

If you loved this episode and want to watch Barry try more tasty treats, make sure to check out last week’s episode, when he took on Bao by Kaya.
