That's right, PlayStation fans: A new console is headed your way. Sony confirmed that a fresh PlayStation console is in development, according to Polygon and the Financial Times, though there's no word on when it'll arrive.

It's been five years since the PS4 debuted in 2013. The console was the company's most successful console release since the PS2 in 2000. More than 80 million PS4 units were sold globally from November 2013 to June 2018. Anticipate that number to rise in the coming months as holidays bring sale surges. The 2017 holiday season saw nearly 6 million PS4 units sold worldwide.

Gaming makes up a huge chunk of Sony's revenue—23 percent of its $75 billion for the 2017 fiscal year, so it's important for them to stay on the cutting edge of the industry.

“At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware,” Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said.

Will you buy the PS5 (if it's called that) when it comes out?
