Telecommuting is all the rage in the workforce these days, but if you don’t already have a job that could be done remotely, the prospect of finding one right now may seem daunting. Luckily, there are a ton of opportunities for all skill levels, whether you’re seeking to break into a new industry, recently earned your degree in your chosen field, or just want to make some extra dough with a side gig during your downtime. If you’re a motivated self-starter that doesn’t need a boss looming over you to get great work done, hustling from home may be your ideal situation.

From roles in customer service and business management to opportunities to launch a lucrative career in tech or social media, check out the list below for entry-level jobs you can do from the comfort of your home.

1. Virtual Assisting

“Virtual Assistant” sounds like a fancy title - and it’ll definitely look good on your resume - but it’s not as difficult a profession to get into as it sounds. If you know your way around a computer, are organized, diligent, and quick to get things done, you can get started helping clients with everything from administrative tasks to managing appointments to canceling their cable.

Fancy Hands is always hiring entry-level assistants, but you can also look into a virtual assistant training course, which can help you start your own service in as little as 30 days!

2. Transcription

Transcription work involves listening to audio or video files and accurately writing everything that’s said down. Though a decent grip on grammar is a plus, all you really need to become a remote transcriptionist are the ability to listen closely and type quickly.

There are a bunch of companies that hire out newbies, including Speechpad, Scribie, TranscribeMe!, GMR Transcription, and Tigerfish.

3. Social Media Management

Whether you’re fresh out of school with a marketing or communications degree, or just know how to fuel engagement and harness the power of Instagram on your personal account, there are plenty of ways to launch your professional career in social media. From managing campaigns and cultivating a brand image to helping companies gain new followers, entry-level roles are always opening up. Keep an eye on job listing sites like Upwork to stay up to date and find remote positions.

4. Customer Service

Customer Service experience comes in many forms - I’d argue that anyone who has worked in a customer-facing position, even at a restaurant or retail store, has what it takes to answer questions, solve problems, and keep people happy. So why not do it from the comfort of your home?

Accolade Support LiveOps, and Working Solutions are always hiring phone-based customer and tech support agents and they all offer virtual training for relative beginners.

5. Chat Support

If you absolutely hate talking on the phone (I mean, it’s 2020, don’t we all?), develop your customer service skills through a more desirable medium: online chatting! Live chat support agents simply require rapid typing skills, good grammar, the ability to multitask, and a passion for helping people.

The Chat Shop recruits entry-level agents and provides training, while SiteStaff consistently seeks new applicants.

6. Data Entry

Various companies, such as Amazon Mechanical Turk, The Smart Crowd, and Clickworker utilize crowdsourcing for micro-tasks and data entry, which may include research, data validation and extraction, and database development - no professional experience required.

However, you can also seek out freelance and entry-level staff positions directly with employers on job sites like FlexJobs. This Columbus, Ohio-based business, for example, is currently looking to fill a full-time medical data entry position and it’s 100% remote!

7. Content Moderation

If you’ve been on the internet at any point in, say, the past 10 years, we’re sure we don’t need to tell you about the prevalence of aggressive comments, harmful posts, or, more recently, things most of us would consider “fake news.” As an online moderator, you can help keep the web a safe and informative place, and be responsible for spotting and handling unwelcome messages on forums, websites, and social media.

Check out companies like Modsquad, The Social Element, and LiveWorld for entry-level opportunities.

8. Campaigning

We’ve found the perfect gig for anyone passionate about politics, human rights, civic issues, and more. Instead of arguing with people on Twitter, channel your energy into creating change at Change.org, the largest tech platform focused on civic action in the world. They’re currently hiring a remote campaigner to join their newly formed Campaign Success Team in a role that would involve reaching out to citizen activists and encouraging their efforts to make the world a better place. Talk about rewarding.

9. Search Engine Evaluation

How many times a day do you turn to Google for answers? Turns out you can actually get paid to do that! Through companies like Appen and Lionbridge, you can assess the quality of search engine results and targeted ads for Google and beyond. All you need is internet access, some relevant knowledge of the web (which, if you’re under the age of 87, you likely have), and the ability to provide honest feedback. Thanks to Search Engine Evaluators, users can find the most up-to-date and relevant information without having to waste their time clicking through results.

10. Editing & Proofreading

Total bookworm? Put all that time you spend reading to good use. As an online editor or proofreader, your role is to carefully read through documents and check things like spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and verb tense. Most openings simply require a strong grasp on the English language (or any language you’re applying to work in) and/or a bachelor’s degree. Proofreading Pal is even hiring current graduate students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Other opportunities are available through Cambridge Proofreading and Proofreading Services.

11. Tutoring

You’d be surprised by just how many people out there are willing to pay for your knowledge… in just about anything. And no, you don’t even need a background in education to get started! Platforms like TheONE and Course Hero look for experts in a range of fields, from fitness and finance to cooking and chemistry, to tutor users virtually. And if you do have a formal teaching education or certification, you can snag a tutoring gig through Qkids or iTutor. Pretty much the only time it’s ever acceptable to wear pajamas in the classroom.

12. Real Estate

Welcome to the future, where real estate agents don’t even need to be on-site to sell houses. If you’ve got as little as three months' experience in the real estate biz, and are hoping to further your career without disruption, Madison Allied Realty wants to bring you on board. The commission-based role will have you working out of their *virtual* office and, according to their listing, they’ll provide leads, along with everything else you need to succeed, including apps, websites, a contact management system, a template for business cards, and more.

13. Graphic Design

Just about every forward-facing medium requires some sort of imagery, so it’s no surprise that graphic designers are in demand. Artsy types with an eye for design and at least a year of experience (internships count!) can apply for this entry-level position at animal welfare focused startup, 3Rein. They need someone who can create unique digital graphics for presentations, websites, software applications, packaging, and social media, and who is confident in learning new tools and design styles.

14. Blogging

Have strong opinions about things? Knowledge of a few niche subjects? Are you able to put some excellent sentences together? Then you’re most likely qualified to start your journey as a blogger. Whether you’re interested in the restaurant world, the realm of digital marketing, or even baseball, websites want you to provide unique and interesting content that can engage their readers and clients. There are even blogging jobs available for marijuana enthusiasts! Who knew?

15. Accounting

Aspiring financiers can get their start as a remote accountant. While entry-level positions in this field usually require a related degree and a few years of experience (nothing that a past internship or two shouldn’t cover), many opportunities advertise themselves as the ideal launchpad for recent grads or even current students. Looking for a place to start? CPA firm Fully Accountable, a self-proclaimed “fun, fast-paced” gamechanger for small businesses, is hiring a full-time staff accountant now!

16. Mystery Shopping

Becoming a telephone mystery shopper is a great way to bring in extra money, and you don’t need any prior experience to do it. The role simply requires you to call up businesses and report back on your customer experience. Think of it as a Yelp review, except you actually get paid for your feedback. Check out companies like Call Center QA, BestMark, and Perception Strategies (which focuses on mystery shopping in the healthcare field) for available opportunities.

17. Sales

Having a solid background in sales can serve as a major building block for anyone seeking to establish a career in business. If you’re a people person, a great communicator, and know-how to sniff out a good lead or potential customer, there are plenty of entry-level sales openings right now in fields across the board, from Life Insurance to as-seen-on-TV homewares. Head Hunters Staffing, for one, is seeking an “outgoing and confident” full-time sales rep in a remote position, which includes full benefits.

18. Management

Are you a natural-born leader with goals of one day managing your own team? Turns out you don’t necessarily need to start from the bottom. American Income Life, named one of the happiest places to work by Forbes, is looking to train new employees for management positions. According to their listing, this role is for you “if you are looking for a strong company that offers a generous compensation plan, a culture of growth, and the ability to quickly move up in management positions.” The best part? Experience is not required - they’ll teach you everything!

19. Human Resources

Human Resource Specialists are an essential part of any successful company, as they provide a link between management and employees, acquire new talent, and make sure operations are running smoothly. It’s a big job, but those interested can get started in HR at an assistant level, which generally requires a year or two of experience working in an office environment. Remote positions are currently open at HR Magnet, US Tech Solutions, and AppleOne.

20. Call Reviewing

You know when you call up your credit card or phone company and the little robot voice says, “this call is being recorded”? Well, people are needed to listen to those recordings! Companies like Humanatic bring on new call reviewers to listen to, categorize, and analyze those customer service calls and provide valuable data to help businesses improve their overall customer satisfaction rates. This job promises a flexible work schedule and opportunities to grow and earn higher rates as you gain experience, all while sitting on your couch.

21. Tech & Software Development

Needless to say, the tech industry is booming right now, and jobs in software development and engineering are both coveted and seriously high-earning. So how can someone without much experience possibly find work in the field? Good news! Woz U, an innovative project in partnership with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak,  is looking to fill thousands of entry-level tech positions for their clients, in roles focusing on everything from cybersecurity and data science to app development. No formal training? No problem. If you have an Associate’s Degree and a background in computer science, mathematics, or even biology, they want to take care of all your on-the-job training.
