Kobe Bryant Rookie Card Sells for $1.7 Million

Jason Koeppel // ONE37pm

In what seems like a daily occurrence recently, another record was shattered for the price of a modern day single sports card, this time in the Kobe Bryant market.

A Beckett Black Label (BGS) 10 2006-07 Topps Chrome Kobe Bryant rookie card sold last night at Goldin Auctions for $1,795,000, the most money ever paid for a "Black Mamba" card. It was one of only two Black Label BGS 10's that exist of this particular card, as that is considered to be the most difficult grade to receive in the hobby.

The card was one of five that sold for over $1,000,000 during the first night of Goldin Auctions major catalog sale.

Other notable cards included:

1. 2003-04 LeBron James Upper Deck Exquisite Rookie Patch Autograph BGS 8.5

$1,537,500

Back in July of 2020, a BGS 9.5 example of this card sold for $1.8 million dollars, which at the time was a record amount paid for a modern day sports card. It is truly amazing what has happened in the hobby since, and how many times that record has been broken in the last 8+ months.

2. 2004-05 LeBron James Upper Deck "Ultimate Signatures Logos" Logoman Game Used Patch Card (#1/1) – PSA/DNA 10

$1,291,500

This sale set the record for any LeBron James card outside of his rookie campaign, as this was from his second year. The NBA Logoman patch auto is a one-of-a-kind card, meaning that the sky is the limit any time a superstar's Logoman hits the market. Last week alone, Luka Doncic's Logoman 1/1 from his rookie season was sold for $4,600,000.

3. 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 8

Goldin Auctions

$1,353,000

This card is just one grade lower than the PSA 9 that recently sold for $5,400,000 and broke the record for most money ever paid for a single sports card. There are only 35 PSA 8's, 6 PSA 9's and 3 PSA 10's in PSA's population report, so when you combine those wildly low populations with the fact that this card is by most accounts, the most iconic in the hobby, it would not be a shock to see this card continue to rise any time one of the higher graded ones hit the market.

4. 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente PSA 9

Goldin Auctions

$1,107,000

Another record breaking sale, as this is now the most money ever spent on a single Roberto Clemente card, becoming the latest card to join the million dollar club.

5. 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson PSA 9

jackie
Goldin Auctions

$984,000

This sale was another record breaker, as it became the most money ever spent on a 1952 Jackie Robinson card. The total population of PSA 9 examples of this card on the market is 11, and there are no PSA 10's on record.

6. 2007/08 Kevin Durant UD "Exquisite Collection" Rookie Patch Auto (#23/35) – BGS 9

durant
Goldin Auctions

$799,500

This sale set a record for the most money ever spent on a single Kevin Durant card, a market that has been white hot of late, with the Brooklyn Nets looking like a legit championship contender (if not the favorite).
