Who’s Qualified for the 2022 World Cup?

The countdown is on until the kickoff of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and we're less than 10 months away from the start of the greatest spectacle in football.

With Qatar’s place in the tournament solidified based on their host status, many other countries from around world are currently vying for their place next November. 

As things stand, nearly half the World Cup field is set with 15 countries having booked their place in this fall's competition.

Here’s a look at the current state of World Cup qualifying across the globe and how teams can qualify for the world’s biggest competition.

13 nations qualify

The 10 group winners will qualify directly for the 2022 World Cup, while six runners' up will compete in playoff matches to determine the final three spots. Groups with six teams will have second-place finishers compete in the playoffs, while groups of five will only have the top team advance.

The top four qualifying teams will automatically reach the World Cup, while the fifth-place finisher will compete in an inter-continental playoff against a team from either AFC, CONCACAF or OFC.

The top two teams in each group automatically qualify for the World Cup, while the two third-place teams will play to decide a potential fifth Asian nation. That playoff winner will then compete in an inter-continental playoff against a CONMEBOL opponent.

Africa is currently in its final round of qualifying, where 10 group winners from the previous round will face off in the final round. Five nations will ultimately qualify for Qatar.

Qualifying will take place in March 2022 involving all eight nations representing Oceania. Two teams will advance from each group to the final round and the winner of the qualification process will take on the fourth place team from CONCACAF.
