Is 'Sonic Superstars' another quality return to form for 2D Sonic adventures or another misfire from Arzest and Sonic Team?

 Find out in this review!

For fans of 'Sonic Mania' and 2D series entries from the past, this game perfectly replicates the "Gotta Go Fast!" feel of those games. Plus it all looks very nice.

A Classic 2D Look and Feel

PRO 1

Each zone comes with a unique gimmick that will surprise players with different ways to progress. Character-specific levels and special stages are a blast, too!

Inventive Level Design

PRO 2

Jumping up through waterfalls, launching your character as a fireball, creating attack clones, and other cool powers actually make those famous emeralds quite useful.

Those Chaos Emerald Powers!

PRO 3

Later stages tend to throw up unfair obstacles and sudden enemy pop-ups that impede not just your speed, but your fun.

Cheap Deaths Galore

CON 1

Half of this game's tunes are insanely catchy and evoke warm feelings of 'Sonic Mania's' amazing soundtrack; the rest of it is composed of shockingly terrible tracks.

An Inconsistent OST

CON 2

The earlier bosses are fair, all things considered. However, the late-game boss fights are an exercise in frustration and suck out all the joy of this game.

And Even Cheaper Bosses!

CON 3

Final Score

7/10

'Sonic Superstars' is a solid 2D throwback experience that does so many things right. Sadly, it does so many things wrong and keeps this platformer from being great.
