4 Regular Guys Describe Their Wildly Different Skincare Routines

mens skin care mobile
L-R: Tyler, 24, Sean, 26, and Phil, 36 / Sarah Jacobs/ONE37pm

A constant source of fascination, at least for me and the people of Reddit's /r/skincareaddiction, are the different skincare routines of the modern man. With the men's grooming industry growing at a clip—predicted to hit $166 billion by 2022, according to a report by Allied Market Research—more and more dudes are becoming increasingly concerned about their largest organs (the skin, you guys… the skin).

But it can be a daunting process to figure out where to start if you have no idea what you're doing. What I recently discovered, apropos of a survey completed by my work colleagues, is that some guys don't do a whole lot to their faces. Do some men just wake up like this? In some cases, yes. Yes, they do. And I get it, skincare is personal and sometimes a cowboy wash will suffice and maybe the majority of men are just fine getting through life hoping they won't end up looking like the mask in The Mask. However, it's important to have a skincare routine. At the very least, wear sunscreen, my guy.

To shed light on what a routine could look like for you, I cherry-picked four regular dudes in their twenties and thirties with vastly different regimens to divulge how they take care of their faces.

Sean Harris, 26

Do you use skincare products? What brands?

Sean Harris: C & C, Jack Black, Dove Men+Care, Shea Moisture.

How do you discover new products?

Harris: Usually products get recommended to me and I do a trial and error kind of thing.

Do you have a favorite skincare product?

Harris: Shea Moisture products with African Black Soap or Raw Shea Butter.

How would you say you first got involved in skincare?

Harris: My girlfriend actually [laughs]. Although I was very well coached by my mom—who has seemed to have found the fountain of youth—it's been my girlfriend who helped me figure out what works best for my skin as well as the proper way to use the products. Years later, I’m still on the same routine and can count the number of breakouts I've had on one hand.

Describe your daily routine.

Harris:

Morning Routine:

  1. Wash my hands before I touch anything. I like to make sure I start with a clean slate (no pun intended).
  2. Pre-wash my face with hot water using a washcloth and get the process started.
  3. Lather with Nubian Heritage's African Black Soap "Anti-Acne + Clarifying" Face Scrub and Wash.
  4. Use cold water to rinse off the soap.
  5. Apply toner using a cotton pad. I typically use Nubian Heritage's African Black Soap "Balancing + Clarifying" Toner. Let air dry.
  6. Moisturize. African Black Soap can get drying so you must make sure to moisturize. I typically use Nubian Heritage's African Black Soap "Anti-Acne + Clarifying" Moisturizer.

Night Routine

  1. Wash my hands before I touch anything.
  2. I pre-wash my face with hot water and get the process started.
  3. Next, I lather with African Black Soap*. Like the actual raw bar of African Black Soap. (You only want to create enough lather for a thin layer on your skin. Too much lathering can be drying).
  4. Rinse off the soap with cold water.
  5. Apply toner using a cotton pad. I typically use Nubian Heritage's African Black Soap "Balancing + Clarifying" Toner.
  6. Moisturize. I typically use Nubian Heritage's African Black Soap "Anti-Acne + Clarifying" Moisturizer

*Since African Black Soap can be pretty drying, it's best to use it two to three times weekly. On days that I don't use the raw soap, I just repeat my morning routine.

Is there a limit to what you will spend on skincare?

Harris: Not necessarily. I wouldn't spend an arm and a leg but I wouldn't go cheap and damage my skin or hair.

Tyler Huyser, 24

Do you use skincare products? What brands?

Tyler Huyser: Kiehl’s.

How do you discover new products?

Huyser: Word of mouth.

How would you say you first got involved with skincare?

Huyser: I first got involved when I discovered the L'Oréal store downstairs (Editors Note: We share an office building with L'Oréal HQ). Prior, I had only ever really used a moisturizer—being a brown boy, I always had to make sure to not to look ashy.

Do you have a favorite skincare product?

Huyser: Kiehl's serums.

Describe your daily routine.

Huyser:

Daily Morning:

  1. Kiehl's Close-Shavers Squadron Smooth Glider Precision Shave Lotion before shaving.
  2. Kiehl's Razor Bump Relief after shaving.
  3. Clean & Clear persa-gel 10 for any zits.
  4. Neova Smart Skin-care Intensive Retinal Spray on cheeks (every two to three days) with a cotton ball.
  5. Kiehl's Daily Reviving Concentrate (three drops spread over whole face).
  6. A light amount of Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream over whole face.

Night:

  1. Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate (three drops spread over whole face).
  2. Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream over whole face.
  3. (sometimes) Kiehl's creamy eye treatment with avocado.

Sundays I'll use the Vichy Masque Argile Purifiant Pores, Body Shop Japanese Matcha Tea Pollution Clearing Mask, or Skinceuticals Clarifying Clay Mask.

Is there a limit to what you will spend on skincare?

Huyser: $100.

Matt Bogart, 32

Do you use skincare products? What brands?

Matt Bogart: No.

How do you discover new products?

Bogart: My wife.

Do you have a favorite skincare product?

Bogart: Olay wipes and first aid moisturizer.

How would you say you first got involved with skincare?

Bogart: My wife insisted that I use some skincare.

Describe your daily routine.

Bogart: I shower daily, but I only put on my skincare cleanser when I remember. So maybe I apply it twice a week? That's pretty much it.

Is there a limit to what you will spend on skincare?

Bogart: I never pay for skincare. I did not use any products in my single years.

phil vuong 5296

Phil Vuong, 36

Do you use skincare products? What brands?

Phil Vuong: Kiehl's for Men, Cremo, Baxter of California, Ursa Major.

How do you discover new products?

Vuong: Samples, word of mouth.

Do you have a favorite skincare product?

Vuong: Kiehl's Facial Fuel.

How would you say you first got involved with skincare?

Vuong: I was a senior in high school and had an AP English teacher (an older gentleman who had been teaching for over 30 years). Whenever the class asked him semi-serious questions, like, "Do you have any advice for college/life/being successful?" His answer was, "You have to moisturize! It's very dry out there." Although it was a joke (at least I think so), it's something that has always stuck with me over my life and I started using facial products after that; I think it's made a big impact on my life [laughs].

Describe your daily routine.

Vuong: While I shower in the morning, I use Kiehl's Facial Fuel Energizing Face Wash. After I get out of the shower, I use a toner (not daily, only when I have time) and after that, I apply Kiehl's Facial Fuel Energizing Moisture Treatment.

At night, I use either Cremo face wash or Kiehl's Age Defender Dual-Action Exfoliating Cleanser (only like three times a week max). Then I use a recovery cream. I hope that doesn't sound like a lot, but I don't always use the toner and the exfoliating cleanser, although I think they do help! If you strip them out, it's still only four steps (two in the AM, two in the PM).

Is there a limit to what you will spend on skincare?

Vuong: $40 per item.
