How Do You Moisturize Your Face?

Every guy should moisturize his face. Some guys think they are too "manly" to slap a bit of facial moisturizer on after they wash their mugs. I'm here to tell you that if you don't moisturize your face, you risk looking like a California Raisin or this stretched, scrotal thing from Doctor Who.

We are born 75 percent water, and as we age, we slowly dry out naturally. “By the time we're adults, the USGS says, adult men are about 60 percent water, adult women 55 percent. Elderly people are roughly half water,” according to NPR. Young = grape; old = raisin.

This is all to say: Don't be a raisin. Moisturizing is easy. It prevents you from drying out. But the real question is how do you moisturize? Do you need a separate cream for your face than you do for the rest of your body? (Yes). Should it have SPF pre-loaded into it? (Yes, unless you want to apply sunscreen separately. The culprit for premature aging is the sun. Sunscreen is vital).

You can buy all of the fancy products you want, but if you stick to these derma-tested generic brands, you’ll be getting everything your skin needs without any added benzyl-parahydroxybenzoates.

CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion with Sunscreen with SPF 30

CeraVe is cheap, you can find it at almost any drugstore, and the moisturizer includes SPF, which blocks harmful rays and keeps your skin’s moisture barrier intact like The Wall in Game of Thrones. It comes in a small bottle with a pump, so you don't have to do any guesswork as to how much to put on. Two pumps should do ya.

Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Energizing Moisturizer SPF 15

I don't know why but I love the smell of this. It's very subtle but weirdly… energizing? Kiehl's, a skincare brand owned by L'Oréal, has long been the leader in customizable skincare. Walking into their store can be a bit overwhelming. But this Facial Fuel Energizing Moisturizer includes SPF 15 and plenty of vitamins. It's not oily and, despite having sunscreen in there, doesn't make you look like a bedsheet.

Despite the higher price point, this cream is ultra moisturizing. Any dry patches will be instantly eradicated. It's sulphate– and paraben–free, which is perfect whether you have sensitive or oily skin. "I'm a man with combination skin with dry, flaky irritated patches around my nose, and after 1 month of using this, I honestly now have the best skin I've ever had," reads one review.

Jack Black Beard Oil, $25

It’s important, if you have facial hair, to moisturize the skin underneath your beard. Nobody likes beardruff, especially when it looks like you just necked back a can of Pringles and left the crumbs on your black T-shirt. This beard oil is super easy: Pump 2 to 3 times into your palm and work into your beard, making sure it gets rubbed into your skin.

Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1, $9.50

Last but not least is your lips. They probably take the most flack, and with the changing weather, they can end up looking like a cat's asshole. While I also recommend using a lip balm with SPF if you can, I also know that it's rare to find one that doesn't leave your lips covered in mystery white sludge. This Kiehl's balm is pretty versatile and includes aloe vera and vitamin E.
