The yeehaw movement was alive and well on last night’s MTV Video Music Awards red carpet. 6lack, an American rapper, singer and songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia (pronounced “black”) owned his subtle cowboy moment.

As we've said before, the MTV Video Music Awards has decisively delivered some of the most memorable moments in entertainment history. From outlandish moments like Britney with the snake and Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech, there is always a wild takeaway from the culturally-packed evening.

ONE37pm favorite 6lack took a different—much more subtle—approach. Posting to Instagram an hour before hitting the spotlight, 6lack arrived to honor his nomination for Best R&B Video for his song “Waves” (With Normani) in a head-to-toe black fit.

Wearing a suit designed by 29-year-old fashion up and comer Shangguan Zhe, 6lack tapped into the “Old Town Road” pandemic while wearing this piece from the menswear label’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection. Western motifs are here to stay and this suit is special.

The jacket is encrusted with a crystal flame that sweeps from the hem to the lapel. The black slacks are similarly bedazzled in graphic symbols. Designed by Celine, the wingtip single monk strap black dress shoes bring the perfect amount of sophistication. The look was styled by Dianne Garcia and included the artist's “normal Rolex, a couple of rings [by] different designers, and a hat that makes me look like somebody’s uncle,” he said to The Coveteur.

We have a joke in the ONE37pm office that if you pitch an article or social media idea that a horse might end up in the artwork. We launched a video series called “Hype Corral” where editors round up the latest and greatest into a metaphorical pen while cartoon cowboy hats flit across their heads. Though 6lack topped his look with a newsboy-style cap, an apparent addition as it wasn’t included in the runway version, the vibe feels ultimately rancher.

6lack took home the 2019 MTV VMA for Best R&B Video, but this subtle fit ensured one thing—that win or lose the prestigious award, “We already won."

Diplo took shots of cognac with Megan Thee Stallion. He even pops up in the “Old Town Road” remix music video. As stated in his Twitter bio, Diplo is that “random white dude [who] be everywhere.”

Lil Nas X

Lil Nas X's can’t-get-out-of-your-head country/hip-hop crossover hit "Old Town Road" holds the existing Billboard Hot 100 chart record for longest consecutive weeks at No. 1. But just a few months ago, before the whole world was singing about having lean all up in their bladders, Lil Nas X told Rolling Stone that he was a college dropout crashing on his sister's couch.
