Expert Advice for Cleaning Dirty Leather Sneakers

We know that life can get messy.

You wanna buy very expensive sneakers and then run through the dirty streets of New York City. Do your thing.

But what happens when your puddle jumping, subway riding and Central Park visiting damages your prized jawns? Anarchy.

The trusty folks here at ONE37pm are covering the stuff that matters, like how to get the dirt off your favorite leather sneakers. We’ve got you.

We tapped sneaker-cleaning expert Jason Angsuvarn—founder of the footwear world’s favorite product line, Jason Markk—and got him to spill the details. Below, he explains how to keep your expensive leather sneakers fresh.

Recommended tools for cleaning leather sneakers:

  • Jason Markk Premium Shoe Cleaner
  • Standard Brush
  • Premium Microfiber Towels

Steps for cleaning dirty leather sneakers:

  1. Use the brush to brush away any dirt and debris from the bottom of the sole up to the upper laces and tongue.
  2. Use the brush to clean the uppers. Most standard leather is durable and can be cleaned with the standard brush, but if the leather is premium and delicate, use the premium brush to prevent damage.
  3. Apply a generous amount of cleaning solution to the brush and then dip it into a glass of water. Shake off the excess liquid and begin brushing in an upward motion.
  4. Wipe down with the microfiber towel.

Things to remember when cleaning leather sneakers:

  • For untreated leather (like you’ll find on the Air Jordan 1 Shattered Backboard), do not wet the leather directly. Dampen a microfiber towel and wipe down the leather.
  • If you’re unsure of the type of leather, start with the premium brush to be gentler.
  • Jason Markk’s Quick Wipes are perfect for maintaining leather shoes. Tuck a few into your gym bag or office desk for easy cleaning.
