MM6 Maison Margiela’s Spring-Summer 2023 show at Milan Fashion Week was all about the power of intimacy. From the invitation into the behind the scenes look of their private rehearsals where the performance details get solidified, to the main show where even if you were in the back rows you still felt incredibly close to the main part of the stage that held all of the action.

With the show sitting on its main stage, you could see the Auditorium di Milano Fondazione Cariplo as if you yourself were the beautifully dancers, who performed a run-through of Igor Stravinsky’s seismic ballet – The Rite of Spring

The 60-piece ensemble of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, conducted by Wladimir Schall, were also in the stalls making its final tunings before the dress rehearsal began, and from there followed a brilliant show that can be best described as art in the highest form.

MM6 Maison Margiela’s SS23 collection is crafted with the vision of ballet dancers in mind. From the very beginning, the show was all about displaying fashion in dance mode, with the sleeves of the scoop-necked jumpers being attached in reverse, allowing for arms to be mobile while prancing and gliding your way through whatever routine life has you dancing.

The vests showcased during the show are scaled up and layered, with a glimpse of the MM6's Salomon Adv Skin 5 running vest, which was first introduced for Autumn-Winter 2022, featured throughout.

The pieces are constructed and worn with sultry playfulness, such as the shrunken spaghetti-strap tops that cinch the waists of boxy satin coats, and and svelte knitted camisole dresses that combine nicely with MM6's high-waisted skirts, which were also on full display. The five-zip jacket with sharply-slanted cap sleeves is redefined as a ballet dancer’s leotard in polished black calfskin.

And that was only the beginning.

Beautiful graphics accompanied the variety of bleached denim maxi skirts, roomy mohair knits and stretch jersey tops, along with notch-lapel coats made exclusively with ivory duchesse satin.

Dirt-washed wide-legged sky jeans and sky blue rose jersey slips that paid homage to one of the Maison’s most legendary collections could also be seen during the show, and to top it all off, the silhouettes were accompanied by a large footwear selection that takes the ballet shoe and disrupts in a way that only MM6 can.

And the Japanese bags were luxurious as well.

As is always the case with MM6 Maison Margiela, this is a collection that promotes the brand’s core philosophy which is – rather than impose how clothes should be worn, instead, these are clothes to be lived in as you please. And that's what fashion is all about. Doing as you please.
