It's always so nerve-wracking when you're given the ultimate choice to make at the start of every mainline Pokémon game - out of the three creatures presented to you, which one will you select as your starter? The options at hand have always broken down into three types - fire, water, and grass. In the case of that third option, grass type Pokémon have always proven to be beneficial battle allies that come through in the clutch whenever possible. As of Generation IX (Pokémon Scarlet and Violet), there's a grand total of 112 grass-type pocket monsters. And right now, we're going to present to you 26 of the very best grass type Pokemon that exist within that specific elemental type.

What is a Grass Type Pokémon?

TWITTER PROMO 2
Loveleen Kaur / ONE37pm

Grass type Pokémon have existed since the very first generation of the popular monster-collecting RPG series. On the offensive front, attacks such as Leech Seed, Sleep Powder, Effect Spore, etc. have no effect on that specific elemental type, so keep that in mind whenever you throw them into the heat of battle against Pokemon that also rely on those types of maneuvers. Some of the moves that players are most familiar with when it comes to grass type Pokemon are Absorb, Giga Drain, Razor Leaf, Solar Beam, etc. It's worth noting that grass type Pokemon are tied with rock types when it comes to having the most weaknesses (which are five) out of all the other elemental types. Plus grass type Pokemon are tied with bug types when it comes to being the most resisted type - grass types are resisted by seven other elemental types.

26. Leafeon

  • Generation IV

Eevee's popularity among the massive Pokémon fanbase is known far and wide. The little normal type creature is super adorable, plus its affinity for being able to evolve into eight elemental final forms is impressive. One of those evolution types is this grass type Pokémon named Leafeon, which can be birthed via the Moss Rock and Leaf Stone. It might not be the strongest of the Eevee evolutions, but it can still hold its own thanks to decent attack stats.

25. Chikorita

  • Generation II

This precious little grass type made its grand debut in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. And for most fans, it was practically love at first sight. This starter Pokémon is definitely a fine choice to build up to its final evolution (more on that later), plus its cutesy nature makes it super endearing. Chikorita captured our and everyone else's hearts once it started making the rounds across several episodes of the Pokémon anime series.

24. Carnivine

  • Generation IV

Carnivine exudes scare factor vibes based on design, which is clearly inspired by the Venus flytrap. It also gives off some silly vibes thanks to those signature googly eyes it sports. With both those factors combined, you can't help but have some love for this Bug Catcher Pokémon. The fact that it's officially known for having "sweet-smelling saliva" also gets it placed on this list of the best grass type Pokemon.

23. Vileplume

This classic Grass/Poison type Pokémon is pretty much a walking flower that is one of the final forms attached to Oddish. Vileplume gets a lot of props from us for its great design (those massive petals and that warm smile make us feel all warm and fuzzy inside) and its impressive Special Attack and Special Defense stats.

22. Gourgeist

  • Generation VI

Simply put, Gourgeist is the type of Pokémon that spooks us a bit. It's pretty much a living, breathing pumpkin that's capable of expanding itself into three different sizes from its Small form - Average, Large, and Super Size. This Ghost/Grass type creature certainly invokes a bit of fear into any trainers that come across it. Capturing one is worth it thanks to that high intimidation factor and its commendable defense stat.

21. Decidueye

This Pokémon is pure elegance in living, breathing form. The graceful feathers and the beautiful color scheme encompasses Decidueye's extravagant design. This evolved form of Dartrix looks amazing and relies on the powerful elemental type combination of Ghost and Grass. Having this airborne pocket monster in your party is worth a shot since its Attack, Special Attack, and Special Defense stats make it a force to be reckoned with.

Once your Exeggcute finally evolves, that set of angry eggs transforms into a towering tree that sports three coconut-shaped heads. And when that powerful new form takes shape, a strong hybrid Psychic/Grass type Pokémon makes its presence felt as comedy relief and a battle-hardened party member for every Pokémon trainer. We've always had a ton of appreciation for this OG member of the Pokémon franchise. And on the combat front, its solid HP, Attack, and Special Attack stats are nothing to sneeze at.

19. Bellossom

  • Generation II

We already showed our adoration for one of Oddish's evolved forms in Vileplume. And now we'd like to do the same for another one of that Pokémon's recognizable forms, which is none other than the alluring Bellossom. Based on this creature's appearance in the animated series, we could never forget Bellossom thanks to its signature proclamation of its name every time it appeared onscreen. It features one of the more iconic Pokémon designs as it looks like a living, breathing flower. And when it's time to enter the heat of battle, the Special Attack and Special Defense stats for Bellossom make it worth investing your time and energy into.

18. Ludicolo

  • Generation III

How can you not love this guy? If you're one of the few folks out there that remember Amingo from Marvel vs. Capcom 2, then you can obviously see the similarities between that fighting cactus and this "Carefree Pokémon." Ludicolo combines the best of both worlds by being a Water/Grass type creature that relies on signature abilities such as Swift Swim and Rain Dish. On the Special Attack and Special Defense front, Ludicolo is a worthy addition to your growing Pokémon roster.

17. Bulbasaur

When everyone started their journey to become the very best that no one ever was, you had the choice to choose between Charmander, Squirtle, and this quintessential Poison/Grass type Pokémon. Bulbasaur stands next to all those super iconic creatures from the very first generation and it still held up as one of the most lovable Pokémon we've ever laid eyes on. Its raspy voice just warms our soul every time it used to say its name in the animated series.

16. Lurantis

The "Bloom Sickle Pokémon" is nothing to trifle with, ladies and gents. It may look all cutesy and non-threatening, but its outer exterior should never get anyone to let their guard down. Lurantis draws its prey in thanks to its sweet aroma...AND THEN IT STRIKES! Once Fomantis evolves, this lovely Pokémon comes a calling and treats trainers to a creature that sports high Attack and Special Attack when it comes time to do combat.

15. Tsareena

  • Generation VII

Capturing and training a Bounsweet is worth the effort due to the prize that lies at the end of its evolutionary trail. Going from that Pokémon to Steenee and then to Tsareena is one of those Pokémon trainer goals that everyone should aspire to. Tsareena aka the "Fruit Pokémon" looks grand and has a demeanor that gives off that of a high-class noble. The overall design of this creature points to its high marks in encompassing pure elegance and its high Attack stat means it's one of those grass type battlers that can really pack a punch.

14. Meganium

  • Generation II

Chikorita has already appeared on this list as a part of the start of this Pokémon's evolutionary tree. As it grows stronger, it grows into a Bayleef then balloons to the big "Herb Pokémon" known as Meganium. That name says it all - what we have on display here is a mega-sized behemoth that can soak up a whole lotta damage (its high Defense and Special Defense stats point to that statement being nothing but facts!). Meganium's one of those Generation II Starter Pokémon evolutions that we regard so highly.

13. Serperior

Nintendo / The Pokémon Company
  • Generation V

The regalness and elegance of Serperior are simply unmated. Making the decision to start off your journey in Pokémon Black and White with a Snivy paid off handsomely since its final form gifted you with this gem of a grass type monster. It looks so gorgeous and looks like the type of Pokémon that wouldn't look out of place in some sort of royal setting. Serperior is considered to be a high-class Pocket Monster that comes with commendable Defense, Special Defense, and Speed stats for anyone looking to have one for themselves.

12. Tangrowth

  • Generation IV

You totally remember the Generation I Pokémon Tangela, right? Well, it so just so happened to get a new type of evolution within Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum that happens once the move Ancient Power is finally acquired. And then, the beefy creature covered in vines known as Tangrowth is born. Tangrowth is a fave of ours thanks to its strong toolset and stats that truly put it on a higher tier of grass type creatures that are great party members. Its HP, Attack, Defense, and Special Attack stats are all high and make it worth adding to your roster of fighting party members.

11. Sceptile

  • Generation III

Just look at that smirk! Even though it always looks like it's clearly up to no good, we can't help but love everything about Sceptile's overall design. Selecting a Treecko, strengthening it into a Grovyle, and finally pushing that former evolution to upgrade to a Sceptile results in this slick Pocket Monster becoming a part of your roster. The sharp leaves attached to its arms, plus its praiseworthy Special Attack and Speed stats also make Sceptile worthy of being placed on this list.

10. Celebi

  • Generation II

We'd be crazy to exclude this time-traveling beauty from a list of the very best grass type Pokemon! Celebi's such a cute Pocket Monster that's been turned into a vast lineup of hugable plush dolls that we just so happen to own. The fact that it's capable of leaving lush green vegetation in its wake is another one of the reasons why we love Celebi so much. And on a combat level, all of Celebi's stats are amazing across the board and make it worth adding to your crew as an unstoppable force worth empowering.

9. Gogoat

  • Generation VI

Gogoat comes off like a massive tank, doesn't it? So much so that the denizens of the vast Pokémon world regularly mount it and form bonds with them during their long travels. We recognize just how much of a proud beast this Pocket Monster is and just how intimidating it can be when the time comes for it to put down a rival trainer's Pokémon. Its insanely high HP stats, plus its equally acceptable Attack and Special Attack stats are also worthy of our praise and applause.

8. Roserade

  • Generation IV

If we were all living in a world populated by Pokémon, then we're quite sure no woman would ever get used to catching this living bouquet at every wedding they attend. Even still, you can't help but be enamored with the allure put forward by this Poison/Grass type Pocket Monster known as Roserade. This gorgeous Pokémon comes from the evolutionary trail started by Budew and continued by Roselia. Roserade's battle efficiency comes from its high Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed stats.

7. Shaymin

Nintendo / The Pokémon Company

Here we have another adorable grass type Pokémon that exudes the real-life characteristics of a hedgehog. And what makes it so special is its classification as a Mythical Pokémon that can morph into two different forms - Land Forme (Grass type) and Sky Forme (Grass/Flying type). We're bigger fans of the oh-so-precious and lovable Land Forme that appears here on this list - just look at how cute this little tyke is! We also chose to honor Shaymin on this list of the very best grass type Pokemon thanks to its high stats across the board.

6. Ferrothorn

  • Generation V

Catching an unassuming Ferroseed may come off like a waste at first. But in the process of pushing it to level up and meet its true potential, that mission becomes well worth all the trouble since it evolved into this "Thorn Pod Pokémon." Ferrothorn is a Steel/Grass type creature that's pretty much a living impenetrable fortress that can do some real damage via its Iron Barbs ability. It may not be the fastest, but its high Attack, Defense, and Special Defense stats make up for that weak link in Ferrothorn's game.

5. Venusaur

Nintendo / The Pokémon Company
  • Generation 1

Venasaur is such a legendary member of the original 151 Pokémon that hail from the Kanto region. Fans just couldn't get enough of seeing Charizard, Blastoise, and this big boy that has a massive tree coming out of its back in the game, trading card game, and cartoons. We love good old Bulbasaur and we feel the same way about Ivysaur. But it's Venusaur we recognize as one of the highest ranking grass type Pokémon we've ever had the pleasure of raising to level 100. Venusaur's Mega Evolution form, plus its high Special Attack and Special Defense stats point to its legendary status.

4. Zarude

  • Generation VIII

As we get closer to mentioning the best three grass type Pokemon of all time, it's about time we showed our fondness for the vicious-looking "Rogue Monkey Pokémon." This sharp-clawed killer looks so frightening due to the fact that it's a hybrid Dark/Grass type creature. This species of monkey Pokémon is a powerhouse - just take a quick peek at its stats across the board and you'll realize why it's worth having a Zarude amongst your primary battle competitors.

3. Rillaboom

  • Generation VIII

Speaking of powerful monkeys that reside in the wide and wonderful world of Pokémon, we gotta mention that all-powerful "Drummer Pokémon" known as Rillaboom. The hulking build of this Pocket Monster and its penchant for soaking up a ton of damage before it can finally be felled are two of the reasons why we rank it so highly on this list. If Donkey Kong were a Pokémon, we're pretty sure it'd look like this guy. On the stats front, Rillaboom's HP, Attack, and Defense are pretty monumental.

2. Tapu Bulu

  • Generation VII

What we have here is a legendary guardian deity that has the mystical ability to help vegetation grow in whichever area it takes refuge. Plus it can make its wooden horns grow to impressive proportions and do even more damage when combat arises. Tapu Bulu is a Fairy/Grass type Pokémon that's practically a god whose powers are extraordinary in practice. We've always loved the Aztec-like design of this Pokémon and its strong stats in the areas of Attack, Defense, and Special Defense. Simply put, Tapu Bulu is one of the very best.

1. Kartana

Ladies and gentlemen, feast your eyes on the massive Ultra Beast that can lay waste to an entire army of Pokémon in one fell swoop. The greatest grass type Pokemon of all time is none other than the "Drawn Sword Pokémon" known as Kartana, who also sports the highly effective abilities tied to Steel type creatures. Kartana (also known as "UB-04 Blade") sports a cool regular form and an equally cool Shiny form that affords it extra cool points. Its insanely high Attack power, strong Defense, and respectable Speed stats make up the fearsome vigor this flashy Pokémon wields.
