We're already more than aware of Elvis Presley the music icon, the man who's sold over 500 million records worldwide, and has gone on to be recognized as one of the best-selling artists of all time. However, what gets lost in the sauce way too often is Presley's success as a bonafide movie star. Not very many musicians have been able to obtain the type of success Elvis achieved with his films, and as somebody who's seen every single one of them (yes every single one of them—most by way of a TCM marathon on the anniversary of his passing in 2012), I can assure you that if you haven't ever given any of his movies a chance, you're thoroughly missing out on some excellent entertainment.

Today marks 46 years since Elvis' untimely passing, and similar to how we've commemorated other music stars on their respective birthdays or anniversaries of their passing, Bob Dylan and Prince as an example, we're commemorating Elvis albeit in a slightly different way. Below is a guide to all 31 of Elvis Presley's movies in order from his first to his last. Hopefully this guide is helpful and leads you to some much enjoyed entertainment.

How many movies did Elvis Presley make?

Screen Shot 2023 08 13 at 6.01.19 PM
MGM

If you didn't already catch it, Elvis Presley churned out 31 movies during the course of his career. That's actually quite a bit in a relatively short amount of time when you think about it seeing as though his first movie was released in 1956 and his last in 1969. 31 movies in 13 years is more than what a lot of other actors were putting out during that era (and even today), and on top of that, Presley was still releasing music and performing as well. Let's check out the full list below.

1. Love Me Tender (1956)

Screen Shot 2023 08 13 at 6.11.08 PM
MGM
  • Cast: Elvis Presley, Richard Egan, Debra Paget
  • Elvis' role: Cliff Reno
  • Notable song in the movie: "Love Me Tender"
  • IMDB Rating: 6.2

Love Me Tender marks the film debut of Elvis Presley, and ironically enough his casting came by way of Paramount "loaning" him (actors used to be signed to actual studios back in the day) to 20th Century Fox as he was originally expected to be a project with Katharine Hepburn and Burt Lancaster called The Rainman. Released in 1956, the movie is about a Confederate group ordered to rob a union of its payroll funds at the end of a Civil War. Since the act came after the ending of the war, it's considered to be a crime of robbery, and the men involved take the money and run.

In the film Elvis plays Cliff Reno, the youngest of the four Reno brothers and husband to a lovely woman named Cathy (Paget). The only problem is, Cathy was previously engaged to one of the robbers involved, and has married Cliff without them knowing. Messy boots.

  • Notable song in the movie: "Loving You"

With Love Me Tender underneath his belt, Elvis' next task was to get a movie with a major starring role under his belt, which he did with 1957's Loving You. Starring alongside Lizabeth Scott and Wendell Corey, Elvis played the role of a delivery driver named Deke who unexpectedly gets discovered by music execs. What follows an up and down road on the journey to success. While the movie currently isn't available on streaming, you can watch clips on YouTube.

Fourteen months later Vince gets released from prison, and upon having his talent recognized by a record company executive at the nightclub he's working at (Tyler), goes on to become a huge rockstar. Jailhouse Rock remains one of Elvis' most notable films, having been selected in 2004 for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for its cultural significance.

It's looking like Danny is going to go the crime direction at first, but luckily he gets offered a singing gig at a club when a club owner (Paul Stewart) hears him singing. Naturally this attracts a competitor in the form of a familiar face, leaving Danny in somewhat of a jam.

Paramount Pictures
  • Cast: Elvis Presley, Juliet Prowse
  • Elvis' role: Spec. 5 Tulsa McLean
  • Notable song in the movie: "Wooden Heart"
  • IMDB Rating: 6.2

1960's G.I. Blues was a bit of art imitating life as Elvis himself had been to the army in 1958. In fact, some of the pre-production aerial shots were taken while Elvis was stationed in Germany right before his release. The plot of the movie was relatively simple—a young man in the army (Presley) has dreams of opening up a nightclub upon his release, but isn't quite sure how he's going to come up with the funds to do so. In what winds up being an unconventional way to get money, the young soldier makes bets his friend Dynamite to win over the heart of an elite local dancer (Juliet Prowse). Long story short, Dynamite ends up being transferred, and now the soldier must win the heart of the dancer himself.

United Artists
  • Cast: Elvis Presley, Charles Bronson, Lola Albright, Joan Blackman
  • Elvis' role: Walter Gulick
  • Notable song in the movie: "I Got Lucky"
  • IMBD Rating: 6.1

Elvis as...Rocky Balboa? Kidding! Only with the Rocky part though as Presley did put on the boxing gloves for his role as Walter Gulick in 1962's Kid Galahad, which is the story about a young kid who takes up fighting after exiting the military broke and jobless. Being a sparring partner at the gym is only gig he can get, but it winds up being the gig of a lifetime as he starts training to become a professional fighter. Sure the owner of the gym (who's the one that encourages him to fight) has his own ulterior motives, but that's besides the point. This is another Elvis film that isn't on streaming but needs to be soon!

Josh is a G.I. scout sent by the U.S. government to try and convince a family who owns a Tennessee mountain to lease the government so that way they can build a missile silo, and Jodie is the backwoods relative that hates his cousin just for the heck of it. Check out Viva Las Vegas as it literally takes you around the city—you might even recognize some familiar monuments, which is super cool as you can see how they've evolved. As for the movie itself, Elvis played a musically-inclined race car driver named Lucky Jackson who loses the winnings he had planned for purchasing a new car motor at a hotel pool. Now he's got to win the money back so that way he can compete in the Grand Prix, which obviously stinks a little bit. Well, at least he finds a love interest right?

  • Elvis' role: Charlie Rogers
  • Notable song in the movie: "Poison Ivy League"

A fight is yet again the source of the main character's problem in Roustabout with Elvis playing the role of Charlie Rogers. Charlie is a singer at a coffee shop that lets a few smart-mouthed coffee boys get him riled up to the point where he kicks their butts. Unfortunately this means Charlie is fired, but luckily for him, he meets the manager of a traveling carnival (Stanwyck) and is able to get a job with them. On a different note, there's no way Elvis didn't get into at least a couple of fights in his lifetime—he was just little too good in all his fight scenes. Just sayin'.
