If you’ve been scrolling down your for you page over these past couple of weeks, then you’ve more than likely come across one of the latest challenges that has taken over the platform as of late, and it’s a friendly familiar throwback from a much simpler time in our lives. Rewinding all the way back to 2006, Ciara’s “Promise” was one of the hottest songs of 2006, with its success extending into 2007 as well.

To date, the single remains one of Ciara’s most successful songs in her catalog, and while many have kept “Promise” in our regular streaming rotation in the years since, TikTok has managed to give it new life with a dance challenge that hundreds of thousands have participated in. Here’s a look back at the history of the song, along with the challenge so that you can get in on the fun as well.

Following the success of her 2004 debut album Goodies, Ciara began working on her sophomore effort Ciara: The Evolution in spring and summer of 2006. Noting how all of the singles from her first album were up-tempo tracks, Cici specifically wanted a smooth mid-tempo song to re-introduce herself to the world. “Promise” was one of the first songs from those writing sessions, and was recorded at the Tree Sound Studios in Atlanta. Eventually it was decided that “Promise” would be the lead single for her new album, and the song impacted radios on October 16th, 2006.

“Promise” was an instant hit, drawing comparisons to some of Prince’s classic R&B records, and the track reached number one on the U.S. Hot R&B/Hip Hop songs chart, and number eleven on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, making it her best performing single on both charts.

Promise TikTok Challenge

Okay so you can choose to do this challenge either solo or with your partner, but it is going to require a little dancing and slight flexibility. What you’ll need to do is have a point of view (aka POV), which can be anything from people mistakenly thinking your child is actually your sibling because you look so young, or how you start acting “once the liquor kicks in.”

Once you decide your POV, you (and your partner if you have one) will have to hit the dance move that Ciara does at the 3:37 mark in the music video (which we have linked above). While not a super hard move, it does require some slight back flexibility, and once you have it down you can put your spin on it.

That’s it! Make sure to keep up with us for more of the latest happenings on TikTok.
