Most of us have been cellphone holders now for a decade-plus (perhaps even longer), which means we've all been "there" at least once. You're distracted, having a bad day, a clumsy moment, etc., and boom—you drop your phone. For some of us, those drops have meant phone cracks that aren't just unattractive, but cause serious damage to the point where the phone is kind of struggling to, ya know...work. For others, those drops have meant their phones were broken altogether, and there's nothing worse than breaking a phone before you're done paying it off (or after you've just paid it off). While phones have definitely gotten sturdier compared to let's just say ten years ago, you still need a phone case for ultimate protection the same way you need cases/covers for your earbuds and tablets. No worries! We've put together a guide on the best phone cases for protection in 2023 and beyond that are reviewed and vetted to a T.

We reviewed tons of different cases and can vouch for our selections getting the job done when it comes to preventing cracks, scratches, dents, or the worst case scenario of the phone being permanently broken. We tested dozens of cases for both iPhone and Android, and while we don't recommend dropping your phone on purpose to test it yourself, we're confident that if in the instance you do drop your phone, it will still look fresh out of the box. From our best overall pick of the Otterbox Symmetry Series Antimicrobial ($39.96) to the very affordable SPIDERCASE Designed for iPhone 13 Case ($10.64), not only are these cases heavy duty, they are also quite stylish and fun to have on your phone.

The Best of the Best Phone Cases for Protection:

1. Otterbox Symmetry Series Antimicrobial

Otterbox

The Best Phone Case for Protection, Overall

  • Pros: Has rugged protected covering, a slim design, multiple colors/designs to choose from, offers a great protection
  • Cons: Runs on the costlier side
  • Price at time of publish: $39.96
  • Material: Polycarbonate, synthetic rubber
  • Compatible with: iPhone 14, iPhone 15, Samsung Galaxy S20, Samsung Galaxy S-23 Samsung Galaxy J3, and more
  • MagSafe: Yes (MagSafe compatibility)

For starters, the Otterbox Symmetry Series is one of the slimmest phone cases on the market. While the case isn't "thick," it's polycarbonate and synthetic rubber construction is more than enough to get the job done protection wise thanks to its antimicrobial coating. Our multiple drop tests show this case to be a tough one that can withstand being dropped from a range of heights and locations without so much as a scratch. The Otterbox Symmetry Series is compatible with just about any phone that has been created in the last several years, though you may have to do some digging to find which retail location offers a case for your specific device.

In addition to the great coverage the case offers, the design is a clear sleek one, isn't too heavy, doesn't create extra bulk/heaviness in your bags/pockets, and is durable enough to get some years out of it. The $40 price tag may be worth more than what you are spending on other cases, but in return you'll get one of the most protective phone cases that you can possibly own.

2. SPIDERCASE Designed for iPhone 13 Case

Amazon

Best Budget Pick

  • Pros: Comes at a very affordable price, has multiple colors to choose from
  • Cons: May not protect as well as other cases, only compatible with select iPhone devices
  • Price at time of publish: $10.64
  • Material: Polycarbonate
  • Compatible with: iPhone 13, iPhone 14
  • MagSafe: Yes (Compatible with MagSafe Shockproof)

The SPIDER Case comes at an almost "too good to be true price" of $10, and for that $10 investment comes a return that's good enough to get the job done when it comes to protecting your phone. A military drop test proves this to be case that doesn't give way very easily, which can be attributed its 2-layer structure and 360 degree full body protection. If you're wondering how else the SPIDER will protect your phone, the case is also made with rubber inner cover that accompanies the polycarbonate back cover, and is shock-proof to prevent sensitivity. We're especially fond of the sleek model as it stops the phone/case from being bulky, and it's neat that the case is still very much a rugged one.

SPIDER also makes sure to throw in a couple of screen protectors for good measure when you purchase, and if you want to play around a bit with the color options there's more than twenty to choose from. Again, all of this for just slightly over $10 isn't a bad deal at all.

3. Otterbox Galaxy S23 Case

Otterbox

Best Phone Case for Androids

  • Pros: Slim design, durable, has multiple color options
  • Cons: Runs on the costlier side
  • Price at time of publish: $39.95
  • Material: Synthetic rubber slipcover, polycarbonate shell
  • Compatible with: Samsung Galaxy S23, iPhone 11 - 14, iPhone XR, and more
  • MagSafe: Yes

Another Otterbox inclusion, we found the Commuter Series to be the most efficient and protective case for Android users, in particular those who have a Samsung Galaxy S23. Built to withstand drops from multiple heights (including hip height), the Commuter Series is a Magsafe protective as other Otterbox models, but with even more of a slim design. With each case we conduct what we call a "pocket test," which is basically a test of how easily the phone fits into your pockets with the case on. For jacket/coat/hoodie pockets, it was almost as if the phone wasn't there at all. For our jogger/sweatpants test, the Otterbox also allowed the phone to pretty much slide right into the pocket with adding much bulk. With a good percentage of jeans running slimmer as a whole, the phone could still be felt, but not to the point of causing discomfort or feeling as though the phone was going to fall out of your pocket.

The Commuter Series cases are actually made with a synthetic rubber slipcover and polycarbonate shell which contributes to its overall sleekness. Again you'll have to invest a little more than some of the other cases with the $40 price tag, but you pretty much won't have to worry about it breaking.

4. Casely Opposites Attract Case

Casely

Best for Both iPhone and Android

  • Pros: Protective design, durable, slim build, sturdy make up
  • Cons: Runs on the costlier side
  • Price at time of publish: $35
  • Material: Polycarbonate
  • Compatible with: iPhone 11 - iPhone 15, Google Pixel 6 - Google Pixel 7
  • MagSafe: Yes

If you are looking for a phone case that checks the boxes of being both visually stunning while also offering supreme protection, look no further than the Casely Opposites Attract Case, which is available for $35. While the case is bulkier (it ranks as a medium design) compared to the others we've listed thus far, it's about as protective as a phone case can be. The durability is there thanks to features such as the textured side grips which helps to keep the phone firm in your hand while carrying. We also like that the case offers shock-absorbing air pockets that adds to the overall cushioning of the case.

We tried dropping this case several times so that way you don't have to, and each drop resulted in zero breaks, cracks, dents, or scratches. The Opposites Attract Case is another one where the upfront cost is more, but balances out due to its longevity and durability. Plus, who can turn down that gorgeous design?

5. CASETiFY Custom Phone Case

CASETiFY

Best Leather Phone Case

  • Pros: Made with leather, offers great protection, lightweight, isn't as bulky as other phone cases
  • Cons: Runs on the costlier side
  • Price at time of publish: $72
  • Material: Leather
  • Compatible with: iPhone 7 - iPhone 15 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 - Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5, Samsung Galaxy S20 - S23, Google Pixel 6 - Google Pixel Pro, and more
  • MagSafe: Yes

Leather is one of the most protective and durable materials you can have with any item, so if you are specifically on the hunt for a leather phone case, consider the CASETiFY Custom Case, which has a leather option included in their roundup. The case gives you about 8.2ft drop protection, which we successfully tested without bumps or bruises being done to our phones or the case itself. The Custom Case includes MagSafe, and has side sockets to make your life a little bit easier. Additionally, the case also has EcoShock Material for added protection as well. If it's hard for you to justify why you should spend $72 on a phone case, consider that should you choose to make the purchase, you probably won't ever need to buy another phone case unless you want to. That's fair right?

6. OtterBox Defender Series Rugged Case

Amazon

Most Durable Phone Case

  • Pros: Has a rugged case and a rubber coating, durable, can withstand drops of all heights
  • Cons: Blocks phone from recognizing finger prints, runs on the costlier side
  • Price at time of publish: $34.97
  • Material: Synthetic rubber, thermoplastic polyurethane
  • Compatible with: iPhone 11 - iPhone 15, Samsung Galaxy S20 - Samsung Galaxy S23, Motorola Edge 2022, and more
  • MagSafe: Yes (MagSafe system)

What makes the Otterbox Defender different from others in the Otterbox catalog such as the Symmetry? For us, it's the slightly thicker (but still not bulky) design, and the rubber coating that makes it as heavyweight as it can be. The Defender comes with MagSafe the same way all of their other models do, and accompanies an array of devices including multiple iPhone and Samsung iterations, the Motorola Edge, and more. We found that the Defender qualifies for the military drop, as it can really take a beating without showing visible damage. Depending on your phone/model, you could experience the case interfering with certain features such as Touch ID and fingerprint identification, which is something to consider. If you can work around that, then this is still a great buy.

Our pocket test was a thumbs up as well on the Defender. While slightly heavier than other cases in our pockets (especially our jeans), we didn't the find the extra weight to be too troublesome.

7. Caislean Wallet Case

Best Wallet Phone Case

  • Pros: Doubles as both a wallet and phone case, has a TPU shell, is durable, multiple colors to choose from
  • Cons: Runs on the costlier side
  • Price at time of publish: $34.99
  • Material: Leather
  • Compatible with: iPhone 11 - iPhone 14 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S23, and more
  • MagSafe: Yes (Silicone Case with MagSafe)

If you want to kill two birds with one stone and get a case that also doubles as a wallet, the Caislean Wallet Case should be top of mind with it's all-leather construction. Considering how sleek and elegant the design is, you should try to avoid dropping it all costs. If, however, you do drop the case, rest assured that the protection will be there to prevent any cracks and scratches. The Caislean also does a great job of keeping your cards in place and safe with its RFID and snug card slots. The wallet also features an undetachable TPU shell that is also shockproof. In addition to the three card holders, there's also a separate compartment for storing cash if you need to utilize that feature as well.

What we loved most about the Caislean aside from the safety and protection it provides for both you phone and credit cards is the foldable kickstand the case has that allows it to be turned into a cellphone stand. With so much versatility at play, the Caislean is one of the best wallet phone cases you'll find, and it's very difficult to turn down.

The Best Luxury Phone Case

  • Pros: Made with all-leather, nice design, durable, has a sturdy build
  • Cons: Only one color to choose from, only available for iPhones
  • Price at time of publish: $53.95
  • Material: Leather
  • Compatible with: iPhone 13 - iPhone 15
  • MagSafe: Yes

If you are looking to splurge just a teeny tiny bit on your phone case, then you can go with the Mujjo full leather case which offers a slightly more "sophisticated" look and design. Smooth to the touch, the case is made with all-leather, and is protective with its Japanese microfibre interior. Drop tests show that this is another case that can handle tough drops without having to deal with unwanted with unmarking's thanks in part to the leather being fully wrapped. Another callout feature is the raised edge that helps with protecting the sides of your phone/case. While a little thicker than some other cases, there's still an element of slimness to the design that allows it to fits easily into your pockets, and the button pressing is quite easily without any functions on your phone being hindered.

Considering how nice the full-grain leather design is you should try your hardest to not drop this case, but you can breathe a little deeper knowing your phone will be fully protected if you do.

9. Incipio Duo Case

Screen Shot 2023 10 18 at 1.56.35 PM
Amazon
  • Pros: Affordable, compatible with multiple phones, is shock absorbing
  • Cons: Only one color to choose from, not as technical as other cases
  • Price at time of publish: $12.25
  • Material: Plastic
  • Compatible with: iPhone 6 - iPhone 15, iPhone SE, Samsung Galaxy S21 - Samsung Galaxy S23, and most other Android models
  • MagSafe: Yes

If you want a case that is under $20 and takes it back to the basics without too much "hoopla," then the Incipio Duo Case is your go-to. Compatible with most iPhone and Android models and priced at $12, the case is slim protective one that serves the purpose of adequately guarding your phone. While plastic material isn't our favorite when it comes to our phone case preferences, drops tests indicate that this, indeed, is a case that can handle several drops without faltering. The case itself might be prone to some scratches and dents here and there, but your phone will remain untouched. The plastic composition also means it has less of shelf life than other cases, so you may need to replace it sooner rather than later.

All things said, the grip on the case is easy, and the slimness of the case helps with mobility. For only $12, there's lots of positives that come with the Incipio Duo, which is why it remains one of our favorite phone cases on the market.

10. Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 1

Screen Shot 2023 10 18 at 2.09.13 PM
Smartish
  • Pros: Doubles as both a wallet and case, is durable, has a good grip
  • Cons: Isn't compatible with wireless chargers
  • Price at time of publish: $24.99
  • Material: Polycarbonate
  • Compatible with: iPhone 12 mini - iPhone 15 and older models, Samsung Galaxy X Series
  • MagSafe: Yes (Gripmunk with MagSafe)

You could probably make a whole list just with Smartish inclusions as they are known as one of the best brands for providing quality phone cases at affordable prices. One of their most popular cases is the Wallet Slayer Vol. 1, which is another case that serves the dual purpose of being both a wallet and a phone case. You can hold up three cards along with cash, and we'd have to say the Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 has a solid case for the case with the best grip on this list. While at first glance it may not look like it, this is a case that can very much handle a drop. Whether you are dropping on wood or the hardest of concrete, the Wallet Slayer does a good job of hanging out without taking a beating (or allowing your phone to take a beating).

The $25 price tag is another element that locks us in on the Vol 1. as isn't too pricey, but at not to "cheap" either.

Amazon
  • Pros: Has a cool design, built sturdy, has shock absorption, durable
  • Cons: On the pricier side
  • Price at time of publish: $69
  • Material: Aerospace-grade hardened aluminum
  • Compatible with: iPhone 13 - iPhone 15, Samsung S23
  • MagSafe: Yes

Speaking of a phone case that doesn't look capable of sustaining drops, the Arc Pulse is well worth the $70 price just for the unique design alone. Built for the year 2050, the case is made with a special aerospace-grade hardened aluminum that protects it from every drop at every angle. Adding to that protection is the ability of the case to raise over the sides of the front, back, and camera, which is essential to what we consider full case protection. Quite a bit of shock absorption is present in the Arc Pulse through its custom-engineered SEBS, and the design is so slim that you can put your phone into the pocket and literally forget that it's there.

Incorporated with MagSafe, we consider the Arc Pulse to be a user-friendly case that does its main job of protecting your phone at an elite level.

12. Bellroy Phone Case

Screen Shot 2023 10 18 at 3.06.57 PM
Bellroy
  • Pros: Isn't bulky, minimalistic, hides your cards, offers good protection
  • Cons: On the pricier side, limited to certain phones/models
  • Price at time of publish: $45
  • Material: Leather
  • Compatible with: iPhone 13 - iPhone 14
  • MagSafe: Yes

Bellroy is a brand that has always been lauded for its leather quality, crafting, and attention to detail. While wallets are their main staple, their phone cases shouldn't be slept on either as they have several in their roster that are worth making the final cut. Premium leather and soft microfiber lining is what makes up the Phone Case 3 Card, which results in the case having a smooth touch. What makes this case even cooler is the fact while not being technically classified as a wallet phone case, there's three slots built-in that you can use for card storage should you want to carry your credit/debit cards around with you. Even better is the additional SIM card slot that's featured as well, should you need to take advantage of that.

The upfront cost of the case is $45 which could be considered steep for a phone case, but considering this is Bellroy, the Phone Case 3 Card is actually reasonably priced.

13. Spigen Tough Armor Case

Amazon
  • Pros: Tough, lightweight, durable, can fit easily into your pockets, affordable
  • Cons: Wireless charging could be better
  • Price at time of publish: $22.99
  • Material: Polycarbonate, thermoplastic polyurethane
  • Compatible with: Up to iPhone 15 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S21 - Samsung Galaxy S23, and most other Android models

The Spigen Tough Armor Case is a no-frills cuts straight to the chase phone case that's almost comparable to being a force field for phones. You aren't going to get any funky designs or colors with the Spigen, but what you will get is a tough durable case made with polycarbonate and thermoplastic polyurethane that is very drop-friendly. Drop it on wood—it doesn't budge. Drop it concrete—it emerges with no dents, marks, or scratches. While slightly thicker than other phone cases, we still consider the Spigen to be a slim design—slim enough to pass our pocket check without being deemed as bulky.

Additionally, the case is compatible with wireless charging (though it could be a bit better in that regard), is and is MagSafe. Factor in the affordable $22.99 it costs to purchase, and this is a winner in our book.

14. Pela Phone Cases

Screen Shot 2023 10 18 at 3.46.27 PM
Pela
  • Pros: Built with a strong design, multiple colors and designs available, versatile
  • Cons: On the pricier side
  • Price at time of publish: $59.95
  • Material: From flax shive and a plant based biopolymer
  • Compatible with: Most iPhone, Samsung, and Google phone models
  • MagSafe: Yes

Pela is an actual website devoted solely to phone cases, so when we say there's plenty to choose from for all phone models we absolutely mean it. We got our hands on the Black Cassette phone case for the iPhone 13 Pro, and in addition to being beautifully designed, the case is quite tough in terms of protection. While the cases themselves may not be the most equipped to be dropped multiple times without scratches and dents, it protects your phone from getting those things when it's dropped which is the most important factor. Separating Pela cases from the pack is its sustainability, as their cases are made from flax shive and a plant based biopolymer.

Also cool is Pela's commitment to their customers with their Screen Protection Guarantee, which ensures they'll cover the cost of your repairs if your screen cracks while wearing one of their cases and their liquid screen protector. Not all companies offer that, so we consider Pela pretty cool.

  • Price at time of publish: $19.99
  • Material: Polyurethane, TPU, rubber, polycarbonate
  • Compatible with: Google Pixel 6

The Pixel 6 Crave Case is another case that keeps it minimalistic, but is still very much worth the consideration if you have a Pixel 6. A blend of polyurethane, TPU, rubber, and polycarbonate, the Crave Case gives you all of the factors that make up what's considered to be solid phone case. It passes the drop test as you can drop the case from a variety of heights in a variety of locations without worrying about damaging, the case also comes with dual-layer protection and a shock absorption that improves upon previous models. What you get with the Crave that isn't always present in phone cases are easy-to-click side buttons, and easy access to ports. 16. Burga Emerald Pool Phone Case

Burga
  • Pros: Great design, doesn't slip out of hands, has a good grip, is built sturdy
  • Cons: On the costlier side
  • Price at time of publish: $49.95
  • Material: TPU silicone
  • Compatible with: iPhone 12 mini to iPhone 15
  • MagSafe: Yes

You certainly don't have to go with the design we selected as there's tons of phone cases on Burga's website. Burga phone cases are among the most elite in the phone case world due to their quality. What we like most is the TPU silicone construction which makes the case exterior really tough, and the sleek lightweight design that allows the case to be quite mobile. The overall sleekness of Burga's cases is what we consider to be their strongest feature outside of the TPU material as it can fit easily into pockets, smaller bags, fanny packs, etc. due to the potential bulkiness being eliminated. MagSafe is incorporated into the overall design of the Burga, checking all of the boxes on our phone case requirement list.

  • Pros: MagSafe compatible, lightweight, durable, affordable, good grip
  • Cons: Doesn't have a screen or camera cover
  • Price at time of publish: $19.99
  • Material: TPU Plastic
  • Compatible with: iPhone SE, iPhone 13 - iPhone 15, Samsung Galaxy 8 and more Android models
  • MagSafe: Yes

We've already raved about just how great Smartish is earlier, so you're more than familiar with why they are a great brand to purchase phone cases from. If you can work with not having any covers for your screen or camera, then the Gripmunk case is another solid alternative that's also cheaper than some other Smartish cases. Comfortable and slightly squishy, you'll get a good grip thanks to its textured sides and smooth back. Also, the slightly-raised bumper edges are another bonus as they help with keeping your phone lifted. None of the buttons are covered/interfered with, nor are any of the phones controls from our testing. Most important is the durability. As we said earlier, Smartish cases can take a beating without showing visible wear and tear, which is partially why we love them so.

18. OTOFLY Silicone Case

Screen Shot 2023 10 18 at 5.19.44 PM
Amazon
  • Pros: Affordable, shockproof, multiple colors to choose from, has a soft design
  • Cons: Doesn't last as long as other phone cases
  • Price at time of publish: $12.99
  • Material: Liquid silicone, polycarbonate, rubber
  • Compatible with: Most iPhone and Android models
  • MagSafe: Yes

If you are looking to keep the price under $20, we also recommend the OTOFLY Silicone Case, which accomplishes any phone protecting mission it's given due to its rather unique blend of liquid silicone, polycarbonate and rubber. Sometimes with "cheaper" we've found that they don't last as long as other cases from a durability standpoint. While that is true with OTOFLY, you can definitely get your fair share of wear out of it before it tears (and it will last longer if you aren't dropping it frequently). The button and port cutouts are convenient, there's shock absorption present, and best of all, the case doesn't turn yellow overtime which is a bonus in our book. You can choose to get picky with what the case is and is not offering if you wish, but keep in mind that the asking price is only $12. This is a good deal for a good price.

19. Casebus Samsung Case

Screen Shot 2023 10 18 at 5.29.29 PM
Samsung
  • Pros: Durable, versatile, heavy duty design
  • Cons: On the costlier side
  • Price at time of publish: $47.99
  • Material: TPU Silicone
  • Compatible with: Samsung Galaxy S22
  • MagSafe: Yes

MagSafe compatible and crafted with a heavy duty design that makes the case both durable and versatile, if you are the proud owner of a Samsung Galaxy S22, the Casebus just might be the perfect case for you. Sure you'll have to invest slightly more than the average phone case, but in our opinion the fully-covered maximum protection you're getting as an exchange more than makes up for it. Drop this anywhere, and you'll see that it doesn't break, snap, or crack. The overall fit is a good one as it's either too loose or too snug. The access to buttons and controls is easy, and it passes our pocket test.

While we having nothing against bulkier phone cases, they do have a tendency to weigh down your clothing which can get annoying at times. The Casebus is a slightly thicker than some of the more slim cases we've mentioned, but it doesn't cross that line into being bulky, which is yet another reason why we like it. Plus, the design is cool if you need an extra thumbs up from us as to why you should purchase.

What to consider when shopping for phone cases:

Here are some things to keep in mind while shopping for phone cases.

Durability: Durability is quite possibly the most important factor in your shopping process. Do you want to make the investment on a pricier phone case that's slightly more expensive but you gets years out of the case? Or are you okay with replacing every few months? While we've included multiple different types of cases from a durability standpoint, our suggestion is to make the investment so that way you don't have to worry about frequently replacing your case. Also, the better the case material, the better the protection for your phone if you drop it.

Phone compatibility: What phone are you looking to get a case for? Make sure to do your research because not all cases are made all phones. For example, if you have an iPhone, some cases only go as far back as the iPhone 13. That means if you have an iPhone 12 or older, that specific case isn't going to work. Again, make sure you do your research ahead of time.

Shock protection: Shock protection is important because it's what absorbs the force when your phone hits the ground if you've dropped it. Without shock protection, a phone case is rather inefficient, which is why every single case we included has shock protection/absorption.

FAQs about phone cases for protection:

Here are some commonly asked questions about phone cases.

Will a phone case really protect my phone?

If you have the right phone case for your specific phone, then indeed a phone case will protect your phone. However, it's important that along with your case, you also get a screen protector for full coverage as a phone case will protect the back and sides of your phone, but won't protect the screen if your device falls face first. Some phone cases automatically come with screen protectors, and we've included a couple on this list as suggestions.

What type of iPhone is least likely to get damaged?

Believe it or not, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 are still considered to be the most durable when it comes to iPhones.
