Sneaker collaborations are everywhere in the year 2022, but believe it or not, there was a point in time when the idea of brands/celebrities coming together was more of a rarity. With so many out there, the task of figuring out which is the best can be a daunting one considering that sneaker collaborations go as far back as the 1970s if you want to get technical, when brands starting working with superstar athletes (Dr. J) by signing them to deals that in turn would allow them to promote signature sneakers in the lineup, and down the line make their own shoes. The best sneaker collaborations would start to come out over the next few decades.

As it turns out, that original decision is one of the best in the fashion industry, with collaborations in other realms of the entertainment realm following in the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and present date. That said, what is considered to be the best? Well, that’s what we are reflecting on today. Below are our individual selections of 30 different collaborations that we personally consider to be the best of all time. You may agree. You may even disagree, but we can all agree that these sneakers had and continue to have a major influence in the streetwear and sneakers universe.

For context, the years listed in this article mark the genesis of the partnership between the two brands, which often produced a roster of collabs over the years. Check them out below.

RELATED: The Greatest New Balance Collaborations of All Time

1. Union LA x Air Jordan (2018)

GOAT
  • Union LA x Air Jordan 1 Retro High NRG 'Black Toe'

The first of many which sparked a chain reaction so to speak. There were two colorways in the first drop—the Union LA x AJ1 High NRG “Black Toe,” and the “Storm Blue.” Many consider Union LA and Air Jordan linking up to be the “Godfather” of sneaker collaborations, and it’s hard to argue that sentiment considering that it did change the game in terms of local retailers partnering with major brands.

2. Palace x adidas (2015)

  • Palace x adidas Pro Trainer

It’s also hard to dispute the impact Palace has had when it has come to their major collaborations, one of those being the Pro-Trainers that they created with adidas back in 2015. The original white and red colorway set it all off for the two, which quickly sparked more releases through the year. This was definitely a time in the sneaker world, and it’s interesting to see how far Palace has come since then.

  • Cardi B Club C V2 Women's Shoes

Since Cardi B’s time with Reebok is coming to an end, we figured we would look back on her success with the brand. There’s no denying Cardi’s appeal as being one of the most influential rappers in the game right now, and her collab with Reebok produced many memorable sneakers such as the Cardi B Classic Leather V2, which came in six different colorways and now the Club C V2, which comes in eight.

4. Supreme x Vans (1996)

  • Supreme x Vans Old Skool Camo

The kicks pictured above aren't those from the original collab, as those are pretty much impossible to find these days. But they're a nice homage to the original partnership that you can shop today.

One, the decision to call these Old Skool with a K is so 1990s. Two, this is no doubt one of the best sneaker linkups of all-time. Designed in a camouflage colorway (hence the Camo), this drop was a major glimpse into what was to come, especially considering the fact Supreme itself was still two years away from officially launching. Supreme is still going strong to this day, with their recent Swarovski collaboration being an indication of how their work has helped them to evolve into powerhouses in the fashion industry.

5. Stüssy x Nike (2000)

Nike
  • Stüssy x Nike Air Huarache LE

Stüssy and Nike took over for the 99 and 2000 the same way Cash Money Records did. What started it all was the Stüssy x Nike Air Huarache in 2000 which was a limited edition shoe. What followed was a set of Stüssy x Nike Dunks in 2001, and after that, it was like a volcanic eruption. Some of us have literally grown up with Stüssy x Nike, with the two still joining forces in the year 2022 Stussy x Air Force 1 Mid 'Black White.' Talk about longevity.

The kicks pictured above are their latest collaborative rendition of the Huaraches.

  • Nike x Air Yeezy “Red October”

First, we have to acknowledge that it was a tough decision as to whether or not we wanted to include the Yeezy Brand, but if we are talking about the greatest sneaker collaborations of all time, we had to mention Yeezy in some form whether it was by way of inclusion or exclusion. So we’ll keep it solely about the sneakers here.

Before Kanye’s deal with adidas, he was previously signed to Nike, which resulted in a number of highly successful drops which have been highly coveted since. While there was more than one release, many consider the Nike x Air Yeezy “Red October” (which came out in 2014) to be the pinnacle.

  • Yeezy x adidas Original Boost 350 V2

And since we’re on the topic, the adidas x Yeezy movement was very much a real and impactful one at its zenith. Yeezys were borderline impossible to get, the hype surrounding certain releases was crazy, and the prices (especially resell) could be astronomical. Typically dozens of Yeezys would come out through the course of the year (there seemed to be an average of one to two per month), and while there were a lot of different variations, the Boost 350 V2’s seemed to be the most purchased.

  • Jil Sander x PUMA

There’s no luxury brand and sneaker collaborations without Jil Sander, the one who started it all. The German fashion designer partnered with PUMA in 1998 to release a game-changing shoe that beautifully blended together couture with athletic streetwear. The deal featured a casual version of the King Football Cleats, along with a PUMA version of the Easy Rider, once again paving the way for luxury and athletic brands to come together in the years that followed.

No sneaker collaboration is complete without an A Ma Maniére x Air Jordan 3 inclusion, and many (us included) consider to be the A Ma Maniére x Air Jordan 3 “Raised By Women” the best (the resell prices are an indication of that). The two are still very much frequent collaborators, having just released the A Ma Maniére x Air Jordan 4 “Violet Ore” on November 23rd.

  • Off- White x Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG “UNC”

One of the most prolific partnerships of all time, to say Off-White and Nike has done the damn thing would be an understatement. There’s tons (and we do mean tons) of legendary sneakers from the pair, with our favorite being the Retro High OG “UNC” from a few years back. While we must admit it hasn’t felt the same since Virgil Abloh’s passing, both brands are doing a good job in carrying his legacy forward. Their newest release, the Off-White x Nike Air Terra Forma is scheduled to come out on December 21st, 2022.

It’s hard to believe, but Nike and atmos have been working together since 2001. Yes people, 2001. When you have a catalog that spans 20 plus years, it’s hard to narrow it down to what’s considered to be your best release (especially when you factor in nostalgia), but the Air Max 1 Atmos Elephant from 2007 does hold a special place in sneaker lovers' hearts.

  •  Nike x KITH Air Force 1 Low “NYC”

KITH and Nike have been blessing us continuously since 2017 with both apparel and sneakers. In terms of sneakers, the KITH and Nike partnership seems to veer mostly towards iterations of the Air Force 1, of which there’s plenty that could theoretically speaking make an all-time list. One of our favorites is the “NYC,” because, well, we’re an NYC-based brand.

  • Run DMC x Superstar ‘50th Anniversary’

Correct us if we are wrong, but we do believe that Run DMC was the first hip-hop act to ink a major deal with an athletic brand. That makes Run DMC x adidas one of the best collaborations ever for its cultural impact. The Superstar 50th is an example of that, paying homage to the group who became known for wearing their shell-toe sneakers without laces.

While COVID did delay the initial release of Dior x Nike, fans eventually got their wish with the ‘Oblique Low’ release.
