Best Affordable Digital Watch

  • Pros: Affordable, water resistant, has an LED backlight, easy to set up, nice look, long lasting battery
  • Cons: Display dims faster over time according to some buyers

You don't always have to spend hundreds of dollars to get a quality digital watch, as shown here by the Casio 10 Year Battery Digital Watch, which is available for roughly $20. Made with stainless steel, you might be only spending $20, but you are still getting a high quality attractive watch that is water-resistant, has five alarms, comes with an LED backlight, and a battery Casio says can last ten years. Additionally, customers really love the performance of this piece, with one buyer saying: "I have used my cell phone instead of a watch since about 2001. Decided to start wearing cheap, quartz watches again because I often find myself without my cell phone within reach at rehearsals, recording sessions, lawn-mowing, or work from home situations."

"Picked up a few Timexes and Casios around the same time. So far, I like this model the best for general use. The size of the time display is so easy to read that I have already started preferring it to comparable analog models. I will mostly be looking to buy digital watches like this with big, simple displays from now on." Not too shabby for $20 don't you think?

8. Nixon Rolling Stones Time Teller

Screen Shot 2024 01 24 at 1.17.51 PM
Nixon
  • Pros: Nice style, multiple colors, affordable, water-resistant
  • Cons: Could run big
  • Water resistance: 100 m
  • Case size: 37 mm
  • Band material: Tapered custom 5 link stainless steel

Seeing as though I am a big Rolling Stones fan, I personally own the Nixon Rolling Stones Time Teller, and here are my thoughts about this piece. From a design standpoint, the Time Teller gives you everything you could possibly want as a Stones fan. It has the classic lips and tongue Rolling Stones logo, along with a punk edge/vibe. The quality is quite nice as well as it's made with a custom solid stainless steel. The Time Teller is also very durable—I dropped it once (I know), and it held up completely fine—no breaking or cracking. My only complaint is that the band was entirely too big for wrist, which is a more of a personal problem for as I have small wrists. That said, I was able to solve the problem by taking the watch to go get altered, which is always an option for any watch that runs too big.

All-in-all, if you are a Stones fan and love repping them in your wardrobe, this $175 watch is a good statement piece.

  • Pros: Vintage retro look, can be a collectors item, durable, easy to use, affordable
  • Cons: Buttons can be difficult to use for some
  • Water resistance: N/A
  • Case size: 50.4 × 37.4 × 12 mm
  • Band material: Resin

This Data Bank Watch from Cascio is very much giving 1990s NYC Wall Street banker that "types 43110 on his pager to tell his buddies hello," and that's part of why we love it and had to include on this list. Sure this watch looks like it's straight from 99 and 2000s, and that you'll have to wait until weekends to use it so you don't max out your free minutes, but it also has an incredible battery life, very much qualifies as being a durable watch, and gets the job done of digitally telling you the time despite not possessing the same modern technical features as some of its successors.

"I used to have one of these back in the 1980's, and I used it all the time. When the battery ran down, I was bummed, and back then the batteries weren't so easy to find as they are today. I didn't know they still made these watches, and when I found these, I had to have one. Apparently I'm not the only one who is fond of this old technology. I love the calculator function, and I use it several times a day. I also find the phone number storage very handy. I do not use a "smart phone," and I think they are a danger to privacy and your health. (if you don't know what I mean, you'll find out in time) Anyway, the time keeping is very accurate, as is the date, stopwatch, etc," says an Amazon reviewer excited to have finally found their favorite watch again, and that's tells you everything you need to know about the Data Bank.

Things to consider when shopping for a digital watch:

Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for a digital watch:

Band material: It's important for the band material to be durable and sturdy (like resin or rubber for example) because weak construction is what can cause a watch band to snap, peel, or show visible wear and tear. Since a good percentage of watches are a pretty sizable investment, you want to make sure the quality is top of line. Most of the watches we included on this list are either made of rubber or resin, which are some of the toughest materials for bands to be crafted with.

Watch movement/mechanism: As we mentioned earlier, all digital watches automatically come in a quartz movement, so that's something to keep in mind before purchasing if you are particular about the movement of your watches.

Diameter: The diameter aka the case size is really just matter of how big the actual watch display is. You can almost always find this information somewhere in either the product specifications, or the within the actual description. Of course, you can always reach out to a customer service representative to get the exact diameter specs if they aren't listed.

Battery life: Some digital watches have a long battery life, whereas others have a shorter one. You can also almost always find this information somewhere in the watch description, but if that fails, you can check out the user reviews to see their reports on the battery time of the watch you're eyeing.

Readability: Readability comes down to how big the words and numbers are on the display. This is a tricky thing to assess online as you won't fully know the scale of readability until you've received your watch in person, but you can always take a look at the user reviews as most will give you an idea on how good (or not so good the readability is).

Extra features: We made sure to list some of the key extra features for every watch we included on list, but if you are looking at a watch that isn't listed on ours, you can almost always find those specs in the product descriptions (sometimes they will also be listed in the title as well).

When were digital watches invented?

In case you needed a refresher for what we covered in the beginning. The history of digital watches dates back to the early 1970s, when the very first electronic digital watch, the Hamilton Pulsar P1, launched in April 1972 for $2,100.

The history of the digital watch

Four years after the releases of the Hamilton Pulsar P1, Texas-Instruments would introduce the first under-$20 LED watch in 1976. This affordable $20 watch model is really responsible for changing the digital watch game as it proved that digital watches can be effective and stylish without costing an arm and a leg. The digital watch model has continued to evolve throughout the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and now the 2020s.
